Observation details
Two large and slender shorebirds flew past me as I walked the beach shoreline. I recognized them immediately as avocets: long, thin, upturned bills, cinnamon colored heads and necks, black wings on white bodies, long blue/gray legs. They landed on the beach and looked like they were going to stick around for awhile but I later learned they left before anyone else had a chance to see them. Beautiful, delicate, and graceful birds. Still in alternate plumage. Photos.
