Observation details
Initially ID’d in the field as Curve-billed Thrasher, but after examining my photos I now suspect this was just a Sage Thrasher. I watched this bird fly down from a fence post to the ground, then up from the ground and perch on another fence post at about 30 meters. It was generally brown all over, with smudgy dark spots on the breast. Its eyes were burning orange/red. It had noticeable dark lateral throat stripes offsetting a paler center of its throat. It’s bill was dark, stout, and fairly long and decurved; it seemed too long and curved for a Sage Thrasher at the time, but definitely not as long and curved as the CBTH I saw near Laramie this spring. In flight, it’s tail appeared somewhat darker than its back, with pale corners. I took a couple of crummy photos before the bird flew off and I was unable to relocate it.
