Observation details
Jet black back and cap, with white forehead and black line between eye and all-dark bill; white undersides except along trailing edge of wing, and on outer wing. First individual noted on the beach at 7:03 AM, just a few feet north of the northern jetty where it was able to hide from the blowing sand, rain & seawater being blown by strong, roughly 50mph winds (note that a 73mph wind gust was measured during this checklist time at Rudee Inlet). This individual was hiding behind a sand "cliff" that had been caused by the waves slamming into the beach. It quickly lifted off, hovered facing into the wind, then got blown backwards to the north and farther out over the water before disappearing. Second individual appeared at 7:26 AM, showed same marks, also an adult, and was observed in southbound (into the wind) flight maybe a hundred yards offshore (see the two most distant photographs below).
