Observation details
; floating offshore, dark cap, pale yellowish nape-neck-throat, pointy tail This bird was floating offshore, between me and a foraging flock of gulls, alcids, and cormorants. It was smaller than California Gulls that were near it, and much smaller than Glaucous-winged Gulls that were also out there--a rather gull-like bird, but clearly a jaeger and not a gull. The dark bill was of medium length. The long tail was pointed, but was not as long as it would be on a Long-tailed Jaeger. I observed it for about two minutes as it floated, but then two motorboats sped toward it, making big wakes, and the bird disappeared. I saw some gulls fly off, but could not find the flying jaeger. It must have flown away fast, as jaegers are wont to do. I looked for panicking gulls, but did not see any, so I am guessing that the jaeger went far away.
