Observation details
1 k ad, p, S The bird was observed in flight near Maari birdwatching tower. It arrived from east and made a few rounds on the edge of the marshland (for approximately 5 minutes) before disappearing from sight behind the trees towards south. At the time of the sighting my attention was drawn to the frail profile of the bird as well as the rather long and narrow wings and tail. I identified the bird as a harrier species upon observation but only identified it as c. pygargus later based on the photos I took. The crucial characteristic that distinguish the bird from c. cyaneus and c. macroucus are the two longitudinal stripes on the underside of its wings, the rather large area of black on the wingtips and the overall profile of the bird. These characteristics are well displayed in the attached photos. The identification as c. pygargus was backed by several other birders.
