Observation details
Among the many calling common and least terns around me, I heard an unfamiliar raspy call right over my head. It wasn't the 'bark' of a Caspian tern. I looked up and took 'tail-shot' pictures as it passed by and tried to get more as it turned south over by Short Beach in Stratford. It was more like the size of a ring-billed or laughing gull. I saw the long yellow bill in my photos. A day later I looked at the eBird sightings map for the species and see that royal terns have been seen recently all along the Atlantic coast line of Rhode Island and Long Island but this is the first seen on either side of the Sound.
