Media notes

On the basis of the harshnest of the sounds, as indicated by the complex spectrograms, I infer that these sounds were made by a juvenile. The acoustics, as well as the stringing together of multiple sounds are consistent with the begging behavior of a fledged buteo.

Observation details

The juvenile hawk was heard but not seen, presumably calling from over the lip of a high cliff. I began recording the sounds, then saw an adult Rough-legged Hawk fly in, circle, and leave. It is possible that the juvenile was still in the nest, which could have been too far back on the surface above the cliff for me to see.
