Observation details
From the trailhead, the cry of Cooper's Hawks lead me to follow the calls into the ravine filled with thick, luxurious undergrowth and trees from whence the calls originated. Approaching quietly and slowly, I observed that there were probably three individuals perched in the trees. Although I never saw them distinctly, from my previous experience with Cooper's Hawks, I guessed that there were a couple of juveniles and an adult in the group. After calling for a few minutes they swooped out one by one and moved further down the ravine. The day was overcast and warm. As I was recording, the wind rose in the cottonwoods overhead. Since sunup, few birds had been calling. The hawks were a notable exception.
