Observation details

*rare - despite being quite regular Cape Cod northward, this is just the second state record in the last 10 years according to e-bird, and the first photo-documented -- seen around 2:45, bayside of lagoon, low tide with large Sterna flock. Non-breeding plumage. General distinguishing field marks -- notably smaller than other Sterna terns (partially due to very short legs), dark carpal bar obscured by feathers at times, uniformly gray wings, black edges to tail, dainty bill. Interestingly, same plumage as the few birds that have been summering at Race Point on Cape Cod.
