Observation details
Endangered Lappet-faced Vultures (Torgos tracheliotos) are the largest vulture species ion southern Africa. They feed mainly on the tough skin, tendons and ligaments on carcasses, and are dominant over other vultures. Smaller vulture species often rely on them to break through the thick skin of large animals such as elephants and rhinos. This adult Lappet-faced Vulture was perching in a dead tree on the S27 Hippo Pools Road in Kruger National Park. It was disturbed as people in vehicles stopped to look at it, and after defaecating, took off and flew away.
