Ring-necked Duck (right) with Lesser Scaup (center) and Mallard
Observation details
Continuing. Bette Robo spotted this duck on 7/12/2020, although this is very likely the "Aythya sp." spotted by Chris Martone om 6/28/2020. The duck was at the northern tip of Cemetery Island, closely associating with a female Mallard and three Mallard young. The bird and the Mallards then moved into the water and were joined by the male Lesser Scaup that has been in the area, and that was a little farther down the island shore today. They all moved across a small area of water to the main "tip" of the island and congregated there with about a dozen Canada Geese. The RNDU did dive a few times. The first thing that struck me was the bird's head. A big head with an exaggerated peak. I could never get a good look at its bill, but it appeared to be blue. It is not in fresh breeding plumage, but everything about its plumage pattern and overall structure says RNDU to me: blue bill, exaggerated peak on head, white "wedge" at shoulder, wavy demarcation between dark back and whitish flanks, dark tail area. I had only fair scope views because of distance and lighting. Poor images, only a couple seem worthwhile.
