Observation details
I originally identified this as Ruby-throated hummingbird, but have since received feedback that Broad-tailed Hummingbird is the more likely species as they are far more common in this area at this time of year. This bird is bigger than the Calliope hummingbirds, and the throat feathers cut straight across below the chin, rather than the upside-down V shape of the Calliope throat feathers. This bird is quite aggressive toward other males in the area, but does not chase off females from the feeders. It is also only this species that will perch on top of this bird house like so, he often vocalized in short, fast high pitched 'kips' and scans around at the same time. He is not nearly as shy as the Calliope hummingbirds, and will perch there while I am very close by, and even approached me once, coming within a foot of my face earlier this week. He has a deep buzz when in flight. I am currently working on better documentation to confirm the identity of this species.
