Snowy Plover, banded red flag R3 male, Morro Strand State Beach, Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo County, CA, 10 July 2020, Carol R. Comeau
Observation details
Three Snowy Plovers were seen just south of Ava Paul Lagoon on the upper beach. Two were seen together- male Red Flag R3 (banded in Bahia Todos Santos, Ensenada, Baja California Mexico summer 2019). See my ebird report on May 20, 2019 for my first sighting at Morro Strand State Beach. R3 was closely associated with another plover. I assume it is his mate as the neck color is more brownish tone than black. The State Park Snowy Plover monitor was in the area. R3 had one failed nest this season, but there is time for one more attempt. None of the nests at Morro Strand State Beach (in front of the campground) have succeeded this year. This is, however, the first time in many years that nesting attempts have been made in this particular area. Morro Strand State Beach is closed due to Covid 19. From Regena Orr (State Parks) : This bird actually only had one confirmed nest, which failed to an unknown predator 18 days after initiation. He has been observed on our beaches since April 29th and is often seen paired.
