Observation details
Mega rarity*** Well documented rarity. Provenance of bird was in question and apparently not excepted by the records committee. I was told that it was because the bird had feather ware on it’s shoulders that was conducive with a bird being held wrapped in a towel. This bird showed up after some very severe weather had moved though areas in Mexico where this species is typically located. This could have easily accounted for it’s arrival at this location. After arriving at this location the bird feed primarily on the cones of the Pine trees at this location. One of the residents at this location told me that she put out a large tray of Parrot/Macaw food from the pet store. She said that the bird never tried to eat from this offering and that the only time it came down to the tray was when she placed the water dish that the bird had learn to come to in the center of the tray. She said that the bird awkwardly walked through the mix of food to the water dish and showed no interest in this unfamiliar feed. Something that a captive bird should recognize as food a food source. Apparently the bird departed after it depleted the majority of the cone supply of the Pine trees. While watching the bird, I noticed that when it was not feeding and taking a rest, it would nestle up against the trunk of the tree. The bird was leaning it’s shoulder against the rough bark of tree which easily accounts for any feather ware that was present. It did this consistently through out the time I was observing the bird. After hearing the theory about why it was considered to be a likely escapee, I was baffled why no one else pointed out this behavior. I could not have been the only one to observe this behavior. You tend to learn more about a bird when you take some time and actually watch it and observe the bird’s behavior.
