Observation details
Appears that in me and BJ’s photo of one quail that decided to pose out in the open not far from the rundown yellow house in harsh lighting with the sun directly behind the bird. This bird appears to be a mostly pure male GAQU with very minimal scalings on the breast. Other features favoring GAQU include the dark patch on the belly, and reddish cap. Those photos will be added later. Sounded more like Gambel’s as well. If needed to switch to the hybrid option or just the slash option of the 2 species please let us know as I know this species is very tough and I believe most Gambel’s populations around Borrego Springs have some California Quail traits in them or are actual hybrids.
