Observation details
[Update: expert consensus is that this bird is an (interesting) Audubon's warbler and not a Grace's warbler. Instructive to learn the songs can be this similar.] One singing bird in ponderosa pine at the trailhead (7000'). I could not track down the bird before my group had to leave, but got a recording of the song. A series of sweet notes accelerating towards the end. My first thought in the field was Grace's warbler, and the spectrogram seems to fit as well. Other candidates are perhaps some variation of an Audubon's yellow-rumped warbler song, or a strange junco song. An Audubon's warbler was heard during the hike, as were several dark-eyed juncos. I think dark-eyed junco can be ruled out: recording of singing dark-eyed junco from same area added to the checklist. Perhaps the most likely candidate is an Audubon's warbler, and I just haven't heard this variation of the song before. The bird was heard at 9:45 am. I waited for about 45 min when we returned around 2:45 pm, but could not hear the bird. The habitat is vast... All I had was a cellphone - please forgive the background noise including RFI. But the recording is reasonably clear. Feedback welcome!!
