Observation details
A Franklin's Gull was found near the shelter by Chuck Philo. Later I observed it preening and feeding on the sand/mud bar there. The gull was in non-breeding plumage and had a pink tint to its breast feathers that can be seen in two of the photos. The rosy tinted feathers are typical of FRGUs in summer plumage, and interestingly, they were once called "rosy doves" by early ornithologists. In the photo of the FRGU feeding, it appears that the prey item is a small crustacean. Also note the dull red leg color and along with the dark bill it appears to be a 1st year summer FRGU.
