Media notes
A male Wilson's Phalarope in alternate plumage photographed by Curtis A. Marantz on 9 June 2020 at the Whitewater River delta, north end Salton Sea, Riverside County, California.
Observation details
A dull male seen with the avocet flock at the river mouth was a relatively small, slim shorebird with a small head, a relatively long neck, a plump body, and a conspicuously long, needle-like bill. Also noted were that the plumage was generally dark and brownish, but with a whitish rump and tail, a white throat, and a dull, rufous stripe along the side of the neck. The patterns and coloration were more muted than those of a Red-necked Phalarope, the overall size was larger, and the bird was generally slimmer and more elongate with a much longer bill.
