Observation details
slowly cruised into inter-pier area So of the Lobster Pen Docks; Only dove one time; then proceeded to leave dock area and slowly headed out to Owls Head Bay, passing between moored lobster boats. First noticed from truck. Large sized grebe w/ long yellowish bill. Head held very high, neck erect. Very contrasty Black & White. Viewed from front, white on neck dominated - black hindneck not visible. Back dark, mottled gray. Flanks dark gray, slightly mottled w/ liter gray. Bulges noticed on hind corners of crown. Eye noticeably red, surrounded by black of forehead. Very long bill (length equal to head length from bill base to back of head). Bill was dirty olive-yellow, dorsal and ventral edges more dingy olive. Note: file No. ending in 226 uncropped; bird was very close at one point. Clark's Grebe eliminated because of non-yellowness of bill. Despite date (February), Clark's Grebe eye should be gradually becoming more distinctly under the black crown color; or may have white in the lores area. Clark's Grebe flanks reportedly lighter gray (than in Western;s) at this time. More notes later. Because of the unlikely location for this sighting, suggest others try scoping from Owls Head Light, or watching sea surface from Vinalhaven Ferry. There are also several roads that end overlooking Owls Head Bay that might be productive.
