Observation details
FOY - Thanks to those who reported it (haven't seen this in Utah since 2007)! Seen by many birders since James Hoffman discovered it yesterday. Only peep present (at north end of the main beach near the southern of the two boat ramp dikes): -- very long wings, which extended far beyond tail at rest -- clear white rump visible when it lifted those wings -- legs paler than black (my photos show gray, though they looked sort of olivy at the time--perhaps reflection) -- mottled dark above, with some tastefully rufous tones on head, cheek, and "back" -- bright white below with distinctive, well-defined, black streaks on the breast and flanks (no buffy wash underneath the streaks) -- rufous on cheek and crown bisected by a white (streaked black) eyebrow stripe -- head & face all finely streaked -- bill moderately long (about width of head) and slightly decurved; pale at base of lower mandible -- oft with stubby-necked posture, giving an oddly attenuated, long-legged, squashed body jizz (giss) - [will eventually post photos after sorting through exactly 100 photos--curse you digital camera!!]
