Observation details
We encountered two newontias in primary montane forest in the vicinity of a mixed species flock at 1,640m. These birds differed from Common and Dark Newtonias by have a dark iris, warm buffy wash to the breast, and hint of a white eyering, and reddish-brown tones to the wings and tail. This plumage pattern was similar to female Red-tailed Vanga, however, they differed from that species by smaller overall size and build, thinner bill with no hooked tip to the upper mandible, as well as different behavior and vocalizations. The pair was observed clearly in the forest mid-story for 2-3 minutes. Photos by Dale Wright.
