Observation details

Singing bird first heard, then located in shrubs (Indian Plum, Hazelnut, Wax Myrtle, Himalayan Blackberry) within primarily deciduous woodland (Madrone, Red Alder, Black Cottonwood, Douglas Fir). The vocalization was loud and sounded like a type of warbler but not one that I was familiar with. Following the vocalization I located the bird and observed it moving through low brush. It perched briefly on a 4' fence while it vocalized. Gave the impression of a thrush, but smaller. Raised rufous crest when singing. Thrush-like bill, white breast with black streaks, light eye ring, and rufous crest. The bird flushed across a neighbor's gravel driveway and disappeared into undergrowth. Calling continued so I returned to house to get a phone for photos or recording. I was not able to see the bird again, but calling continued so I made two recordings with my phone. Then I returned to house to see if I could get someone to confirm identification with the recordings and description. Please note: this is private land and there is a lack of safe parking/pull-out options along the road. The Ovenbird has not been seen since June 6, 2020. If it is refound, I will post details on eBird, and consider facilitating access. Until that happens, please do not look for this bird at this location.
