Observation details
35 birds associated with 2 large areas of wrack at/near west end of 2 mile stretch. Most or all appear to be nesting (wrack is on opposite side of canal from road/causeway). 1 chick seen. This concentration of stilts is very impressive for our area, and, for anywhere in North Carolina? Apparently the deposition of large areas of wrack in marshes from hurricanes and other severe storms can be beneficial to certain ground nesting birds. Willets and killdeer are probably nesting here too. In addition to providing enhanced nesting habitat, the wrack has probably enhanced feeding habitat for shorebirds by providing shallow water habitat in the canal.
