Grasshopper Sparrow singing from edge of powerline ROW northeast of horse farm.
Observation details
Unusual location. A Grasshopper Sparrow was singing from the powerline right-of-way just northeast of the horse farm. Bird was just off the main trail out of the horse farm (Range Road on GoogleMaps). Flat-headed; large-billed; yellow mark near eye; plain face and ventral side; shortish tail; insect-like song. Habitat here is marginal. There is appropriate cover, but it is narrow. The ROW is about 150 feet wide and mostly bound by trees, but there are nearby breaks (horse farm to southwest and wet scrub-shrub to northeast). All my other encounters with Grasshopper Sparrow along ROWs to date have been in areas of broader suitable habitat extending outside the ROW. State-threatened species.
