Observation details
We spotted the male PIWO first, then saw the female PIWO foraging nearby. They were near the junction of the Sourdough Trail and the Gardner Park Spur trail. After a few moments observing the two PIWOs and confirming that one was indeed female and one male, two sharp-shinned hawks flew in and landed in the trees near the PIWOs. The 2 SSHAs started harassing the female and eventually chased her off in the distance. The 2 SSHAs then returned to "stalk" the male PIWO who seemed unperturbed. The male eventually flew 200m away and the SSHAs followed. Then they started chasing the female again and nearly caught her. Quite the drama! Much vocalizing by the PIWOs, but not much sound by the pair of SSHAs. They were definitely hunting relentlessly in tandem. This went on for at least a half an hour straight Wish I would have thought of videoing, but I did at least snap this photo with my phone. Has anyone seen this behavior before?
