Observation details
From trip report: “The lone Great Shearwater which was with a small flock of Buller’s Shearwaters off the Poor Knights Islands in the outer Hauraki Gulf (20 April) was undoubtedly one of the biggest surprises of the expedition. Prior to 2011, there were only a handful of records of this species from New Zealand waters and the record (plus photos) will be submitted to the NZ rarities committee (*). It is worth noting that irrespective of which way this individual had come round Antarctica, it was at least 12,000 kilometres from the Tristan da Cunha archipelago, i.e., the only place where this species breeds.” (*) apparently never was submitted... I submitted the record to http://rare.birds.org.nz and now shows as accepted
