Thick-billed Murre ( Uria lomvia) Mount Desert Island High School parking lot Feb 2 2016 MJGood
Observation details
My question, like yours, is why in the MDI High School parking lot...? When released it swam underwater over 250 feet coming up and flapping its wings before moving towards open ocean. Several TBMU had been reported for Maine. It appears that a movement was taking place and this bird overshot the ocean. Upon release, it never showed any signs of distress and very capably disappeared into it's watery world. Like any Alcid, it is not possible to fly if stuck on land... in the ocean it preformed like a healthy bird and happy.
