Observation details
Bird was able to be viewed for 3 to 4 minutes as it flew east into the bay past Fort Wool sometimes stationary or traveling backward in strong northeast winds. Although not clear in extremely distant photos white on rump and pale bar on upper wings clearly showed in scope and binocular views. Bouncing up and down flight more powered and not as stiff as Wilson‘s. Bird was in flight below crests of large waves for periods of time then bouncing/arcing back up 10 to 15 feet above waves in same field of scope view having not traveled forward at all sometimes. Longer notched/forked tail without any leg or toe projection beyond shows in all photographs. Strong squared to crooked to angled to pointed and long wing shape (prominent forLESP) also shows well in distant photographs. More photos available.
