Observation details
This bird was found early this morning and has been present now for several hours and observed and documented by many birders. My observation was only of the bird in flight and making several dives into the water. I did not see the bird eat anything during my stay. This lake contains no fish. Description: an adult Sterna Tern mostly grayish-white above and below. The underwings show mostly grayish-white and have a neatly defined black line to the edge of the outer primaries. Above, the wings are mostly gray with a darker grayish-black carpal bar. The tail is long, white and deeply forked with a hint of black along the outer rectrices. The head has a full black cap. The head and neck are short giving it a “no-neck” appearance. The bill is sharp and red. This tern differs from the similar Common, Forster’s and Roseate Terns by the overall grayish-white plumage, dark line to the underwing outer primaries, the short head-neck structure and lack of dusky wing tips. Did not vocalize during my stay.
