Media notes
This seemed to be one unhappy California Gnatcatcher. I've never heard this sound from them before in this area. A friend suggested I may have gotten too close to a nest (I was on a trail, not off of it). She may have been right. Didn't know what was making this sound until two California Gnatcatchers came out from a bush near me. One went one direction and one went in the opposite direction.
Observation details
When I first heard the mewing from one of these birds I thought it sounded more like a Gray Catbird than what I am used to from a California Gnacatcher. Much louder and what I would call more growly. Came home and listened to various recordings and decided it was a Gnatcatcher. I did eventually see a few. I have never heard the other sound I recorded before. Thinking maybe I got too close to a nest. I have never seen an active nest on the hill, but I've seen parents feeding fledged juveniles, so I know they nest there.
