Observation details
Continuing bird present at least since January 3, 2016. The short, relatively slender, and slightly bulbous-tipped bill, gold-flecked upperparts, long, slender legs, lack of white on the rump, and grayish underwings, including the axillaries, readily distinguish it from Black-bellied Plover and identify it as a "Lesser" Golden-Plover. The very bright upperparts, short primary extension, gold wash on the face, and long-legged appearance identify is as a Pacific Golden-Plover. This species has proven to be regular in winter at this location and is nearly always found with a flock of several hundred Black-bellied Plovers. Today, however, it was by itself, loosely associating with a group of about 15 Killdeer, and a full 0.9 mile from the Black-bellied Plover flock.
