Observation details
On back pond extension of the Santa Ana River to the north of the main channel. This is just downstream of the Lakeview Bridge in Anaheim. With a group of nine Lesser Scaup. During most of the observation period this whole group had their heads tucked down. I was able to get a few photographs when the Tufted raised its head briefly. I was not able to distinguish any size difference from the Lesser Scaup. Because the heads remained tucked, I was unable to distinguish head shape between the two species. The head was a dark brown. The small tuft at the back of the head was apparent both with the head up and in the tucked position. The yellow eye appeared brighter than the LESA. The breast was brown, but lighter than the head. The sides were beige , darker and more homogeneous than the LESA. The back was brown, intermediate in darkness between the darker head and the lighter breast and darker than the back of the LESC. There was minimal white feathering at the base of the bill vs. the much more prominent white at the base of the bill of the female LESCs. The bill was gray with a black tip. The black tip was more prominent than on the LESC. The upper and undertail coverts, as well as the tail are dark brown, darker than the LESCs.
