Observation details
New record high count for Montco by a wide margin: the previous high was 74, recorded on Jan 12, 2013. When we arrived, there were only about 30 LBBG present. More must have poured in as we did some birding on the west side of Church Rd. We were shocked how many were visible when we returned to look over the ice again. We decided to split the birds up into two groups and count them simultaneously. Brian's group was on the ice. Nearly all in this group were adults. 71 were counted. Steve's group was at the edge of the ice, at the one section of open water. 43 were counted in this group, about half of which were younger birds. These two groups did not overlap, and birds were not seen moving back and forth between them during the time of counting.
