Media notes
Both adult Osprey were protecting the newly hatched chicks (2 of 3 eggs had hatched, as shown in photo) from dangerous ultraviolet light. On this cool morning they would use their bodies to cast their shadows on the hours-old chicks, allowing sun at various times to warm them up. This nest is easily observed from the US Highway bridge that spans the Chickahominy river. The nest it built on a cement breakwater that marks the main, deepest channel of the river as it passes under the highway. This nest has been continuously occupied each of the last three years.
