Media notes
2 males visible together (one preening).
Observation details
Initially seen approximately 100 yards upstream from the Campground, but the birds drifted up river approximately 1/4 mile by 10:30 am. All 3 were seen together at one point. Later in the morning two stuck together. Approximately the same size as the Common Goldeneyes these birds were associating with. Irridescent bluish-purple heads (rather than green like a Common Goldeneye), with highly contrasting yellow eye. Dark, petite bill. Steep forehead and more exaggerated rounded nape than Common Goldeneyes. Prominent white crescent on face (behind bill) rather than the whitish spot near the base of the lower mandible found on male Common Goldeneye. Black shoulder "spur" and black back with rectangular white patches visible in the scapulars. In flight, whistle of wings sounded slightly lower pitched than Common Goldeneyes (though this probably isn't diagnostic). Possibly the same (two of the same at least) reported by Williams and Rustay about a week earlier.
