Observation details
First observation at 0620. 2 counted on property. Additional breeding codes: N C A. At 0633, saw pair copulate in the top of an Alnus incana ca 50 m from the nest box in reach 4. Also saw the female entering the nest box. On the return, I flushed a SSHA with prey in its talons from the stream in this area, and it dove into cover near the nest box. The AMKE pair, which had been perched in chokecherries ca 150 m NW, flew back and perched on the nest box; I recorded soft vocalizations. Several sightings of an AMKE hovering over the field during the survey, apparently hunting. At one point I photographed a female (the same individual?) perched in reach 2 with prey in her talons. I also definitively saw a third kestrel, a migrant male (distinguished from the 'resident' male because the migrant had a gap in his left primaries). Heard a EUST singing early in the survey from the east part of reach 4. Later, saw 2 EUST fly in to reach 4 from the E and perch in a willow in the general vicinity of the AMKE box (with both AMKE present on it). One of the two then flew out of sight along the stream and began to sing. These observations do suggest the possibility of conflict between the kestrels and starlings over nesting this year. Detections (number 15-minute intervals in which the species was detected): 11 on property. 1 flyover(s).
