Observation details
While I was in my back yard, I spotted a male Pileated Woodpecker on the ground in the yard next door to ours. A dead Ash Tree had been mostly cut down there earlier in the spring, leaving a tree trunk that stood about ten feet off the ground. The woodpecker was pecking at the base of this tree trunk with its bill, and often big clods of dirt flew away as it did. It would pause now and then, but it kept up the behavior for about five minutes. I was able to go inside the house and grab a camera, and it was still doing this when I returned. I took several photos of the bird. It flew off after I returned the camera inside. I have never seen one of these woodpeckers in my neighborhood until today.
