Observation details
Previously reported at this location the night before by David Hogan. Assembled group of birders eventually heard distant calling of the Mexican Whip-poor-will down the Noble Canyon at about 9 PM. I hiked down the Noble Canyon Trail to where large oak trees are snagged and fallen about over the running creek. Is a bit noisy background sound. The bird started calling again and I was able to approach underneath it in the oak tree tops. Seen once flying in moonlight window overhead. Seen two more times including one look by flashlight for a few seconds as it flew off a nearby bare dead oak snag at eyeball height revealing the cutoff white triangular tail markings and rich brown plumage coloring. Some OK recordings made but the running water of the creek in background using my shotgun mic.
