Media notes

NOTES: Cover density: THICK; 0500-1000 HOURS. SMALL DENSELY WOODED VALLEY IN THE COASTAL FOOTHILLS. THESE WOODPECKERS CALL OFTEN BUT SPORADICALLY. I PLACED MYSELF IN AN AREA WHERE FOUR INDIVIDUALS AT LEAST ONE FEMALE AND ONE IMMATURE WERE FEEDING. THEN WHILE RECORDING OTH 1 FEMALE(S); Sex: 3 UNKNOWNER SPECIES I OBTAINED A FEW CALLS OF THE WOODPECKERS WHICH ARE PRESENTED HERE AS EXCERPTS. THESE CALLS ARE THE MOST FAMILIAR VOCALIZATIONS OF M. AURIFRONS AND GIVE RISE TO THE LOCAL NAME OF CHEJES (PRONOUNCED IN ENGLISH CHE-HE WITH A GUTTURAL H). BNA: Probably the "Churr Call" is heard. Also described as "krr-r-r-r", "sk-k-k-k", "ah-er-r-r-r" or "tcher-r-r-r." CZ 23/02/2004.
