Observation details
Continuing bird, found on second try, 8:30, on pond behind HQ, partnering with a female Mallard for good direct comparison: essentially same size, but warm buffy face and neck, entirely unstreaked (vs. streaky brown); solid yellowish-green bill (vs. orange with dark saddle); small dark spot at gape; sharp contrast between buffy neck and dark brown breast (vs. much less contrast on Mallard); whole body darker brown with light buff or rusty patterning; tail medium to pale brown (vs. white); and in flight at distance against dark background, no white borders visible on speculum (vs. strong white borders). Photos by others do show a thin lower white border, but not visible at distance in binoculars. Many of these features visible in photo.
