Observation details
Continuing bird— Bird only seen sitting and feeding, but the views suggest pure Mottled. Darker tail, gape spot, clean supercilium, eyeline disjunct from nape and crown, clear buffy cheeks, and general body pattern all about as good as can get for mottled. Sent photos of bird to those with experience with hybrids and all concluded bird is pure from what is visible. Unfortunately, no spread wing was viewed so despite the bird appearing pure, the speculum could tell a different story. Submitting as mottled for now, but wouldn’t mind a spreadwing to confirm. EDIT: spreadwing was acquired the following day and shows no large white borders, confirming this to be a phenotypically pure Mottled.
