Observation details
(Rare): “unreported”: ! 11:20a found our own county bird for Caleb! Heard buzz calls and both said aloud ID of it simultaneously. Then we tracked it down and saw it, made recordings of its buzz calls. (And twice, Courtney wondered if actually there are two of them here, may be.) We had many wonderful views of it (or them) as fly-catched circles of junipers. — Beautiful! (Such a beautiful bird!) Gorgeous slate blue gray coloring upperside, and white underside, (noticed today: white white undertail coverts), white eyering, tail when spreads is black in center with white outer feathers. SE front pond by gun range, in mixed flock of birds. (Last seen at 44.12,-121.196). It moved circles about, and then about 10-min. later as we were onto other warblers and found a wood-pewee and OSFL, we noticed that we never again saw or heard gnatcatcher, so it may have moved on, moving in one of the three large passerine flocks we encountered today at Hatfield. — “Ok, I need from you your comment about the gnatcatcher.” — “It was kind of blue, and it was kind of gray. And I think it caught a gnat.” — “I am so in love with you.” — “First heard giving distinctive wheeze call repeatedly from south of path. We approached and eventually saw the bird which was an unmistakable gnatcatcher identified specifically as blue-gray by its whitish coloration to the undertail and clean black forehead cap over defined and even white eyering. Stunning bluish gray on head and upper back; mixed grayish and brownish on lower areas of wing; lighter underside; prominent white edges to very long expressively-flipped tail; thin bill. Flycatching frequently from lower parts of junipers and sagebrush.” — Note: this is a good bird for Deschutes co.! Courtney has only ever had one before, 04/13/2015 on Pilot Butte found by Tony K. I don’t think any others have been reported since then, except for an unknown out-of-towner photoed a couple last year, no locals got to see. [actually, on ebird there have been ~ 3 records since then]. — Note: this date is ~ when Caleb and Nolan found two at Fort Rock last year, when we did our Summer Lake trip with Martin, (04/27/2020).
