Observation details
In sunlit and protected vegetation on west bank of Kennebec River. Foraging in shriveled fruit clusters of a vine ("river grape" Vitis riparia) hanging in box elder. Also spent time in lower, scrubby thickets near by the water (Rhus and Rosa, etc. patches). Greenish above and yellowish below, the grayer head was barely discernible, pale eye arcs, and sharply pointed bill are the main characters I noticed at first. The bird probed dead leaves and the dried fruits. Rare in December in Maine, and generally much rarer away from the coast. This is my second at this locality, but the previous one was in fall.
