Observation details
Discovered by Suzanne Kho. I started to hike down the main trail to find the reported ani. Then I ran into Caleb on his way out of the park. He was kind enough to let me know that the bird was moving west along James St., just out of the park boundary. I eventually came upon a group of birders on the ani at James St. Seen very well and in full profile view as the bird perched on a branch above a backyard fence. The ani made recognizable liquidy squeeky two part like call. Then the bird flew and perched higher up in oak just above the street. A cuckoo with overall charcoal black plumage, shaggy head and breast, huge curved dark gray bill with distinct grooved pattern, and disheveled wings and long tail. Unique horizontal or flattened out stance while perched. Great looks with 8x42s. Photo'd with cellphone. Birding with my dog before vet appointment, so just had binoculars on board.
