Observation details
I was watching this bird feeding on the edge of Hutton Lake and thought it was the recently reported long-billed curlew. It flew north into the grass, joining a second bird. The second bird turned out to be larger, with a much longer bill and no head stripes - the long-billed curlew. This is only the second whimbrel I've ever seen, and the other sighting was on the California coast.
