Observation details
Transcribed from field notes. Photo of sketch attached. "The adult male Lesser Frigatebird was observed along the South Shore [of Sand Island]. It soared over us at 50 feet. It circled giving us great looks at distinguishing field marks. The bird was entirely black except for a white band that went from the axillaries (even some pale feathers in the greater underwing coverts) across the breast to the other axillaries and greater coverts. The head and throat were entirely black and the red gular pouch could be seen as a slit. The bird appeared slighter than the Greaters. Across the breast the white was mottled with black feathering. This created a look of mottled. The axillaries were exceptionally distinctive in this bird." With Michelle Reynolds and USFWS staff.
