Media notes
note short spikey bill, eye ring with expanded rear, dusky wash on breast and whiter throat
Observation details
***mega; third state record and first county record found yesterday by Dan Zimberlin and his father and confirmed at 8:15 this morning with many photos and 'peek' call notes heard and audio recorded; very active with lots of wing-flicking (very kinglet-like) and tail flicks (raising tail); photos document plumage: strong wing bars on dark, but not black, wings, broad eye ring with expansion at rear, grayish head contrasting with olive back, slight crested appearance, grayish wash on breast with contrasting white throat, narrow spikey bill with dark maxilla and orange mandible (although many Hammond's have dark mandible, this one did not, and this is not uncommon in HY birds), fairly short tail with faint pale edge to r6 from below, and perhaps most importantly, very long primary extension extending past uppertail coverts to base of tail (and about as long as the tertial stack, or slightly shorter); fed consistently in dead goldenrods along north and west side of yard at 24 Egypt Lane, often at base of large maple (?) tree, and once moving N along Egypt Lane to the wide parking area on the left and green hedge on right with the green and white leaved vine of Creeping Euonymus. Very cooperative. SLR photos by MJI:
