Media notes
Have many more pics, but these seemed best to show the i.d.
Observation details
Wonderful looks, textbook example (with Sibley's illustration being the textbook) of northern variant, all red head, white spot top of bill, gold-spotted rows on back, no evidence of hybridization. (Picture attached.) Bird was lazily working sap galleries on large maple tree about 300' northwest of the large pavilion which is just north (across parking lot and up the hill) of the circular softball complex. Met up with Dave Wheeler later in the afternoon looking at ducks on the Jordan, we took him and his son Petey to the park to share the bird and he confirmed i.d. Have many pics and videos, bird was oblivious to us on the ground right under the tree and will likely be there tomorrow for easy confirmation. What a wonderful start to the New Year!
