Observation details
I was driving along Pine Kill Road when I spotted an American Woodcock standing in the road. When I stopped, it ran off the road into a small thicket. When I made closer approach, the bird feigned a broken wing. At first I thought perhaps it had been hit in the road. As I snapped a couple photos, the bird took off and flew 50 feet, and then again feigned a broken wing and went into full distraction display. At that point I realized there had to be chicks on the side of the road where the bird had walked out from. I decided to leave immediately as chicks in dead leaves are nearly impossible to see. That meant the bird could get quickly back to her brood.
