Observation details
Continuing. From notes: 10:00 - 10:45 a.m. — Clark's Grebe observed with Western Grebe at 100 yards. Sky mostly sunny; sun 45° above SE horizon; light from behind observer, directly on birds. Video captured [screen captures uploaded]. Western Grebe's bill actually looks more orange than Clark's with more dark on top ridge of upper mandible; Clark's bill is orange-yellow (would be called orange-yellow without comparison to Western) with no dark above or below bill (on ridge, like Western). 11:00 - 11:20 a.m. — Western (?) called a nasal "wha". Clark's (?) called a nasal "cher-chee", the second syllable a rising whistle-type sound. (While looking through scope, difficult to tell which birds the sounds came from) Clark's flapped wings while preening - pale below nape on Clark's appears paler gray; bill seems thinner and a little longer / feet dark with orange-yellow tinge At 50 yards, Western had orange-yellow bill with dark on upper and lower mandible ridge
